I have two tips for people who’d like to save money shopping. The first is:

These are not revolutionary savings techniques but theyare easily forgotten once we set foot inside a retail establishment. Personally, I have spent the past 7 years attending schools which require me to pass through malls on my way home. While this may sound like a dream for a young fashionista, I was, in fact, a young frugalista who had to train herself to stop looking at all the shiny things in the display windows.

Nowadays, I avoid malls like the plague. They are still, more often than not, a means of getting from Point A to Point B in the cold Montreal winter but, I don’t regard them as anything more than very congested commuter tunnels. I never shop for sport.

When I do notice that I need to go shopping — say I have no flat shoes anymore, or one of my three pairs of jeans has a hole in them, I go shopping like a man: Research online, pick a store, walk in, try-on, purchase, get out of mall. I’m only human… I know that if I don’t tell myself “Vanessa, you’re here for pants and pants only”, I’ll see something pretty and say “Well Vanessa, you’re already going to the changing room for pants, why not bring this shirt in as well?”

Those two tips above create my shopping mantra. Even if you never take my advice, please start following my mantra
