I read the Daily Mail a lot. I think that it’s probably my favourite newspaper after the Globe & Mail even though I’ve been told that it’s complete rubbish. This one article caught my eye yesterday in which a German 19 year old girl, on public assistance, was sent a job offer to be a waitress at a nude bar. Her mother freaked out and contacted the media and the unemployment office.
This got me thinking… In Canada, our unemployment law basically state that, if you are on public assistance you must take any job that you are offered. Considering that prostitution is legal in Canada (solicitation is not), if brothels started advertising their services with the unemployment office, would women and men have to work as prostitutes?
I see benefits and downsides of this issue. Obviously, the more people we get off of public assistance, the better. If we can get more people into the workforce, we can increase the taxes that are gathered while reducing the tax dollars spent. Employing people also increases the amount of money that is swirling around in the economy which, again, is a giant plus if we want the economy to grow
And now for the nitty gritty problem with this scenario: A lot of people seem that take issue with being a prostitute. In the German girl’s case, she was only being hired as a waitress and it caused an uproar. The same problem exists with suggesting that people become strippers — people don’t like the idea of working in the sex industry.
Personally, I don’t understand this — to me, a job is a job is a job. Some people, perhaps smarter and definitely more outgoing than I, work in the sex industry and make enormous sums of money that they use to finance their education or build a business.
Now, I’m not advocating that people work in the sex industry if they are unemployed… I’m just putting the subject out there: Is there really a problem with suggesting that unemployed people work in brothels or nude bars?
